Cornwall’s First Golden Age: a new edition

Forget everything you think you know about early medieval Cornwall, about Arthur and his knights, about the Kingdom of Dumnonia, about the conquest of Cornwall by Wessex. Cornwall’s First Golden Age re-interprets the story of Cornwall from the Romans to the arrival of the Normans. This period saw the rise and fall of a kingdom in the west, the colonisation of Brittany and the creation of a distinct, decentralised society. Moreover, it lay the foundations for Cornwall’s later sense of difference. Cornish culture not only survived but blossomed in a twelfth century renaissance that allowed dreams of liberty to linger on.

Cornwall’s First Golden Age was first published by Francis Boutle in 2016 and was the winner of the Holyer an Gof prize for history non-fiction in 2017. This new 2024 edition has been considerably updated and revised to include the latest research by archaeologists, medieval historians and others. It remains the only critical synthesis of Cornwall’s history in the period from the 400s to the 1100s based on the most recent academic work and offers an innovative and radically different perspective on Cornwall’s early history.

  1. The link (above) for the paperback version connects to Amazon but then does not allow delivery to Rep of Ireland? This does not appear to be the case with the hardback version. Is this a glitch or is there some reason why only the HB can be delivered here?

    1. I have no idea. This looks like it could possibly be another consequence of that seamless border between the UK and the EU that we were promised but didn’t get. Or it could just be some internal issue with Amazon. The link is to Amazon’s UK site. You could try a site within the EU and see if delivery would work from there. Or contact Amazon and ask for a solution.
