Like 1979, 1997 was another key election. In England Labour won more votes than the Conservatives for the first time since 1974. In Cornwall the Tories lost all their seats and their vote sank to a historic low of around 30%. Meanwhile, for the first time since 1929 the Liberal Democrats won the majority of seats. In 2005 they took Falmouth and Camborne from Labour to make their first clean sweep for 76 years.
